North Carolina football coaching search 2024: Candidates, hot board, names to watch from top UNC insiders

Mack Brown is a coaching legend in college football, with a career win percentage of .654 (282-149-1) over 35 years. Even he is not immune to a university seeking change, as his second coaching stint with North Carolina will conclude at the end of the 2024 college football season. North Carolina is 6-5 over 11 games and the Tar Heels made a bowl game in each of Brown’s first five seasons at North Carolina since becoming head coach in 2019. North Carolina had a preseason over/under win total of 7.5 games, which won’t hit during the regular season, and that contributes toward marking this season a disappointment compared to expectations.

Brown coached 16 years at Texas between his two tenures at North Carolina. Could the Tar Heels see youth to replace the 73-year-old Brown? If so, who are North Carolina football coaching candidates to watch for? Top North Carolina football coach candidates

One name the staff has identified as a potential target is Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. The 34-year-old never played a snap of college football as instead of having dreams of playing professionally, the son of a coach had his eyes on coaching all along. He enrolled at Alabama and became a student assistant under Nick Saban. Schumann later became a graduate assistant and worked closely with Kirby Smart at Alabama and when Smart became the head coach at Georgia, he brought Schumann with him.

Smart called Schumann his “right hand” when he served as Alabama defensive coordinator before becoming Georgia head coach as Schumann has worked closely under two of the most successful minds in college football over recent years. Schumann has already garnered interest outside of Georgia, including interviewing for the Eagles defensive coordinator position last year, so Schumann’s is sure to be a popular name in this year’s coaching cycle both in college and the NFL. UNC may want to swoop him up before others have the chance. See more candidates at InsideCarolina.
